The Port Authority of Jamaica’s (PAJ) network of 17 ports forms the backbone of the Caribbean’s maritime infrastructure, handling over 80% of the country’s trade volume. Our strategic position, 32 nautical miles from major East-West shipping lanes and 100 nautical miles from the Panama Canal, makes Jamaica a crucial transshipment hub. The ports operate 24/7 with a skilled workforce of 3,000+ professionals, processing over 2.2 million TEUs annually. Our integrated port management system connects with 120+ global shipping lines and handles vessels up to 14,000 TEUs.
Our three public ports serve as major gateways for containerized cargo, with the Kingston Container Terminal leading at 1.8 million TEUs annual capacity. The Port of Montego Bay specializes in cruise and cargo operations, while Port of Falmouth handles specialized cargo. Our fourteen private ports include dedicated facilities for bulk materials: Rio Bueno (limestone), Port Esquivel (alumina), Port Kaiser (bauxite), and Reynolds Pier (bulk cargo). The petroleum terminals process 20+ million barrels annually, supported by 150,000 square meters of storage facilities and advanced loading systems.
The Kingston Container Terminal (KCT) represents world-class maritime infrastructure with 2,667 meters of continuous berthing and 15.5-meter draft capacity. Equipment includes 12 Super Post-Panamax cranes, 83 straddle carriers, and automated gate systems. The terminal operates at a productivity rate of 35+ moves per hour per crane. Recent upgrades include AI-driven container positioning, automated customs clearance, and real-time tracking systems. The KFTL concession has brought US$250 million in terminal improvements, including extended yard capacity and modernized berthing facilities.
Our ports excel in specialized cargo handling, with dedicated facilities for various commodities. The bulk cargo terminals feature automated conveyor systems capable of processing 2,000 tonnes per hour. Liquid bulk facilities include specialized berths with loading arms handling rates of 3,000 barrels per hour. The break-bulk facilities offer 45,000 square meters of covered storage and specialized handling equipment. Our roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) facilities process 100,000+ vehicles annually through dedicated terminals with multi-level parking facilities.
Jamaica’s ports leverage cutting-edge technology including AI-powered terminal operating systems, blockchain documentation, and IoT sensor networks. The Port Community System connects all stakeholders digitally, reducing documentation time by 80%. Smart gate systems using OCR and RFID process 150+ trucks per hour. Environmental monitoring includes real-time emissions tracking and automated energy management. The recently implemented Vehicle Booking System (VBS) optimizes truck flow and reduces terminal congestion by 40%.
The PAJ’s 2025 Master Plan includes US$750 million in infrastructure investments. Projects include channel deepening to 17 meters, 400 meters of additional berthing space, and expanded logistics facilities. Environmental initiatives feature solar power installations generating 8MW, electric equipment transition, and water recycling systems. The Green Port Initiative aims for 30% emissions reduction by 2030. Future plans include automated container handling, expanded railway connections, and development of a new dry port facility.
Our ports offer comprehensive logistics solutions including container freight stations, warehousing, and distribution centers. The Kingston Logistics Park provides 18,000 square meters of modern warehousing with cold storage facilities. Value-added services include container repair, equipment maintenance, and cargo consolidation. The Special Economic Zone framework offers tax incentives and streamlined customs procedures. Supporting services include 24/7 bunkering, ship chandlery, and crew facilities.
The Caribbean Maritime University partnership ensures a skilled workforce through specialized training programs. Our Maritime Training Center provides certification in advanced cargo handling and port operations. Safety programs maintain a 99.9% incident-free record across all terminals. The Port Authority’s Quality Management System maintains ISO 9001:2015 certification. Continuous professional development programs include international certifications and exchange programs with leading global ports.
